Out of care for our elders, we will soon begin enforcement of the Tribal Elders parking permit program. Starting February 16, 2024, a vehicle may not stop or park in an elders-only parking space without a permit. The misuse of an elders only parking space may result in a $40 fine. Repeat or other violations may result in impounding of the vehicle.
We want our elders to have greater access to our facilities and services. So please read below to learn more:
Where are these new requirements coming from?
On October 23, 2023, the Tribal Council amended the Title 9 motor vehicle code to add parking enforcement for elders only parking spaces. This new law will begin enforcement once the elders-only parking spaces are designated.
When does enforcement begin?
Enforcement will begin on February 16, 2024, when the elders-only parking spaces are designated by new signs.
Can I use my old parking permit?
No, you will need to receive a new permit for the new parking enforcement.
How do I receive my own parking permit?
Mandi Moon will be handing out the new permits starting Monday, February 12, 2024. You can pick one up from her office any time between 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Mandi’s office is located in the Children and Family Services building. You must pick up your own permit.
Can I have more than one permit?
No, permits will only be issued one per elder. Additional permits will not be issued for use in multiple vehicles. Instead, please ensure to take your permit with you for use in whatever vehicle you may drive or ride in.
Do I need to drive the vehicle to use my own parking permit?
No, you only need to be present. The elders-only parking space and permit are for your use either as a driver or a passenger.
What is the penalty if I park in an elders-only space without a permit?
The fine is $40 per violation. Costs may be greater, however, if your vehicle is impounded due to repeat or other violations.
When could my vehicle be impounded?
Impounding is a penalty of last resort. Impounding should be limited to repeat violations or other more severe violations, even if the first.
When can I use an elders-only parking space without a permit?
You can use an elders-only parking spot without a permit only for the momentary pick up or drop off a passenger.
