The Port Gamble S’Klallam Youth Services Program’s focus is on providing comprehensive programming for all Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Community youth, to guide them into becoming healthy adults who make a positive contribution to the community. Youth Services does this by providing a variety of opportunities to community youth, emphasizing S’Klallam culture and traditions, healthy lifestyles, positive decision-making, mentorship, and life skills that build leadership.
Youth Services strives to increase:
• Youth participation in cultural activities
• Positive adult relationships with youth
• Youth and elder relationships and interactions
• Opportunities for youth for work experience
• Opportunities for youth to give back to their community
• Opportunities for youth to plan for their futures
Brief Description of Tribe
The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is located on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. It is situated on Port Gamble Bay, for generations, an important natural resource for the Tribe and other Native Americans. The Tribe is a signatory to the Point No Point Treaty and is one of 29 federally recognized Indian Tribes in Washington State. The population of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is currently just over 1,400 enrolled tribal members. About half the tribal members reside on the reservation, along with other community members. Current Youth Services Program Overview
The Port Gamble Youth Services Program is a division of the Children and Family Services Department. The Youth Services Program is a team of 8 staff: Youth Services Manager, Prevention Coordinator, Leadership & Cultural Specialist, Elementary & Family Coordinator, Recreation & Youth Prevention Specialist, Recreation Worker, and two Youth Services Workers. The Youth Services Program Services youth and community on weekday and weekends through on and off-site programming in the four main target areas of Culture, Prevention, Recreation, and Leadership. Youth Services Staff’s offices are housed in the Youth Center and Tribal Gym. Youth Services main target areas are 6th-12th Grade Youth, 4th & 5th Grade Elementary Youth, Young Adults, and Community Families. Youth Services Website: Youth Services Program Website
Outdoor Recreation Coordinator Contracted Hours
250 hours per year
• October-March: 10 hours per month
o Monthly: 1-2 activities and planning
• April-June: 20 hours per month
o Monthly: 2-4 activities and planning
• July-August: 60 hours per month
o Monthly: 1-2 activities
o Monthly: 1 overnight weekend tip
• September: 20 hours per month
o Monthly: 2-4 activities and planning
*Funding is currently approved for the remaining of 2025 and requested for 2026 budget year.
Outdoor Recreation Coordinator Duties
• Take lead responsibility for the planning and implantation of outdoor recreation opportunities for PGST Youth. Included but not limited to, cultural activities, hiking,
overnight backpacking, mountain biking, water sports (kayaks, paddle boards), outdoor exploration, winter sports, fishing, rock climbing, etc.
• Ensure the safety of participants in the planning and implementation of activities.
• Maintain and organize the equipment used in outdoor recreation.
• Be responsible for the ordering and gathering of supplies needed for programming.
• Meet regularly with youth staff and attend calendar planning meetings to incorporate outdoor recreation activities into the monthly youth calendar.
• Work with PGST Education Outdoor Education Program for coordination community outdoor recreation opportunities.
• Work with Youth Services Staff for activity dissemination through fliers, Teams, Tribal Newsletter, invitations, community text alerts, and social media.
• Other Duties as Assigned.
Outdoor Recreation Coordinator Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Must be 21 years of age, able to pass a criminal background check, and pass a preemployment drug screen.
• CPR & First Aid Certified or willing to obtain immediately once contracted
• Become Outdoor First Aid Emergency Certified after contracted, paid by program.
• Have a valid Drivers License without any restrictions and the ability to drive a 15- passenger van with the willingness to learn to tow a small recreation trailer.
• Physical capability to complete outdoor recreation programming activities and have the capacity to support youth during an emergency.
• Must be able to function in an outdoor environment in various types of weather.
• Familiarity or experience working with the Port Gamble S’Klallam Community
• Maintains regular contacts of a positive nature with youth and their families, staff, community members, Tribal staff, various outside agencies, and others to accomplish
program objectives and preserve good public relations.
