Community Garden Technician (Contract Position)

Hours: 16-30 hours per week
Compensation: $26.50 – $30 per hour, depending on experience
About the Role:
The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is seeking a skilled, reliable Contractor to support the PGST Community Garden under the direction of the Garden Superintendent. This role combines hands-on garden work, seasonal crop management, and community education that aligns with the Tribe’s Food Sovereignty goals. The Contractor will use their own methods, skills, and professional judgment to complete assigned tasks and may work independently at times.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and maintain garden beds and soil health
- Move and spread rock, topsoil, compost, and mulch
- Start seeds, manage seedlings, transplant starts, and plant crops seasonally
- Maintain crops through harvest, including watering, pruning, and thinning
- Monitor weeds, pests, and plant health issues and apply management strategies
- Identify crops ready for harvest and notify the Special Projects Administrative Assistant
- Support harvest preparation and produce distribution
- Plan and deliver gardening education or hands-on events for Tribal and community members
- Coordinate event timing and topics with the Garden Superintendent and Special Projects Director
- Transition the garden during nongrowth months and prepare the site for winter
- Recommend improvements based on seasonal conditions and crop performance
- Perform additional garden-related tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs
Qualifications:
- Experience with gardening, farming, landscaping, or horticulture
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong communication and community engagement skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks
- Interest in sustainable agriculture, food sovereignty, and community education
- Ability to work independently and exercise professional judgment
